Nelson and Winnie Mandela on the day of his prison release |
Nelson Mandela was imprisoned for 27 years fighting for racial equality
in South Africa before finally being released in 1990. Three years later in
1993, he visited Glasgow and thanked the city for supporting his cause against
racism. It is therefore worrying to see the sheer extent of racist sentiment
that exists right across Scotland to the present day. Nelson Mandela famously
said, ‘If there is one lesson we can learn from the struggle against racism,
in our country as well as yours, it is that racism must be consciously
combatted, and not discreetly tolerated,’ and I am driven by this
assertion. It is the motivation for all the projects I volunteer my time for, including the Scottish Racism Project (ScRaP).
